The Fall 2013 Alexander McQueen collection screamed Elizabethan! Sadly, when the collection was reviewed by many sources, no one connected it back to this extravagant era. This was the era of Queen Elizabeth I. It was about status, power, and fashion. The white, choke-like, Elizabethan collars really brought the pieces to life (Queen Elizabeth I thought the bigger the better), along with the intricate embroidery and high volume gowns.
There were two sides to this collection, a soft angelic and a beautifully dark look. The soft angelic gowns made me feel like it was straight from Queen Elizabeth I closet. The corsets had the smallest details that made the big picture look even more royal. The corsets were tight and the hips were perfectly wide, staying true to the era. The dark side of the collection made just as much of a statement, but in a very different way. The dark gowns had a sense of sensuality to them. The hemlines were higher...much higher! There were legs for days and the over exaggerated hips just added to the sensuality of the fallen angel-like looks. The softer looks stayed true to the Elizabethan era while the dark sensual garments gave a more dangerous feel(due to the hemlines and construction), but were as equally stunning and still reflected the era.
When one thinks of learning about the Elizabethan era in history class, a yawn might come first to mind, but the McQueen collection brought the historical era to life with a fresh voice, outlook, and imagination. Queen Elizabeth I wanted her outfits to embody status, power, and fashion and this collection was no different. It was bold from head to toe and reflected a strong powerful woman who never takes no for an answer. Sarah Burton never fails to deliver a diverse in-depth collection that let's us all dream, and that my friends is the fashion truth!
