Put On Mascara And Your Party Dress!

I feel like my last entry was about how fashion did not stay true to a certain era. So this entry will be about fashion that did keep true to an era. I am going to talk about an era that was full of elegance and glamour; an era where the rule book was thrown out the window and everyone just partied on. I couldn’t be talking about anything else but the roaring 20's and Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of The Great Gatsby. Although this movie has been talked to death it hasn’t been talked about in a “fashion truth” type of way, so what is the fashion truth?

From the hemlines to the cloche hats, the costumes in The Great Gatsby were refreshingly authentic. The 1920’s was a plate full of fun with a side of daring. The ideal woman was short with a flat chest, no waist, and had great hips to flaunt. High society debutantes like Daisy Fellows and Marian Morehouse were the celebrities of the age. The world was about status and elegance and there was always a glamorous party to attend. In Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby the costumes that Daisy Buchanan(Carey Mulligan) wore were to perfection. She showed the perfect amount of leg and oozed elegance. Catherine Martin, the costume designer for the film really grasped what the 1920’s was all about. The first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think about the 1920’s would be the flapper girl, but it should also be about debutantes and heiress’s. It was not just the fashion that stayed true the era but also the art work. Art deco was the big to do during this time, it was all about industrialization. What shocked me the most was the amount of detail that went into this movie. There are lots of movies that just play into the misconception of an era and not the true history and core of an era. This version of The Great Gatsby did not take that route. Even the cover work for the movie poster was authentic; it was the perfect adaptation of art deco. I give a roaring bravo to the costume team and Baz Luhrmann for creating such a surreal reality of the 1920‘s (and having Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby didn’t hurt either)!

-And that is my fashion truth!
